Almost perfect. Not quite, but reasonably close By terpfan1980 I ordered this item along with a digital music player that is intended to replace the one that this one already included. That particular player would be this one: Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts Digital Music or one very similar to that one that I just completed a review for.
That review said much of what I'm also including below, but I'm repeating here as well since it makes sense to talk about both products at the same time. Here goes...
I bought this jewelry box/music box for my lovely spouse, the lovely Mrs. Dowell. At the same time, I also bought the aforementioned digital music player so that I or she could easily replace the pre-included Rascal Flatts "My Wish" recording with the one on that replacement player (Rascal Flatts' God Bless the Broken Road).
Both of the digital music players (the pre-included one here, and that one) suffer a bit from the same problems in that the recordings are close, but not quite perfect. They are reasonably close to the recordings casual listeners would be familiar with from radio broadcasts, or from playing the songs off the albums (or digital downloads), but there is a hint of noise, and snap/crackle and pop (and no, I'm not talking about the breakfast cereal here) that shouldn't be there and is a bit distracting if that sort of thing bothers you.
These digital music players are nice though in that they are interchangeable and if you don't like one recording, or have grown bored with it, you can easily remove the current one and insert another into the music box/jewelry box in the spot the old player was in. There are several different (I believe I saw at least 10 - 12 different digital music players that fit these boxes listed here when i was browsing through the selection, looking for a couple of favored songs) choices available and should be enough to find something that would work for most tastes. With that said though, you can't just order any song you wish, you are limited to the selection of recordings that were available, so if you don't want to accept one of the pre-recorded songs, you may be out of luck.
It should be noted that these players are apparently light activated. Lifting the lid on the jewelry box/music box is not enough to activate the playback, at least not if there's not some light to be "sensed". That can be a good thing if someone has to share a room with someone else and doesn't want the noise to go off simply from opening up the box to take out something they know is there (and know where to find in the dark ;-) ) These digital music players also include a slider switch that turns them off and will save the battery life.
Batteries are a pair of AAA Alkaline types that are easily enough replaced. Slide open the small tray at the bottom of the music player and you can easily access the batteries that are pre-installed (or were in the one of these items that I ordered). Oddly enough, even with the on-off switch there, the manufacturer had included a small pull tab at the back of one of the batteries just to make sure the batteries were not "activated" prior to shipping. Nice touch.
The jewel box looks very nice and is nicely lined in a black felt like material. While this isn't a huge item and won't necessarily hold an entire collection of precious items, it should hold enough to be at least capable of holding some favored items. It has the advantage of offering a slot where the owner can replace the image on the top of the box (in my case, it came with the Serenity Prayer, but that can be removed in favor of a picture of my or her own), and again, offers the ability to change out the recordings very easily.
Buyers should note that the digital music players that are included use about 15% or so of the space in the music box/jewel box area and that could be a negative for some people. If, on the other hand, you have a significant other or loved one that would love the song and enjoy the box, it is a worthwhile investment. Heartily recommended. Not quite perfect, but close enough to score points with the intended recipients in most cases (or so I would think).
